An Algae-Filled Living Chandelier

The living chandelier does not only lights up a space, but it also actively purifies the air around it.

The living chandelier which is titled “EXHALE” was designed by a London-based designer-engineer, bio-technologist and entrepreneur Julian Melchiorri.
Melchiorri with his several years of experience in biotechnology; develop is idea of the Bionic-leaf, which is based on the principles of photosynthesis: which are plants absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, then integrating to invent this amazing eco-friendly product.
This living chandelier is composed of 70 glass petals of different shape, containing a solution of green algae sustained by daylight, LEDs and drip-feed of nutrients.

The green algae; exhibits the principles of photosynthesis. The transparent liquid filters through the light, giving off a warm glow.

The living chandelier can be used wherever air purification is needed: thus, it can be used indoors or outdoors.
Melchiorri living chandelier earned him an award “the Emerging Talent Award”, during the London Design week. The living chandelier is still a prototype; Melchiorri hopes to bring the technology to larger buildings in the future to help them tackle harmful emissions.
