Location:
The Gurara Waterfalls stretches from Suleja and Minna, in
Niger State, Nigeria. It is about 90 minutes drive from the country’s capital
city Abuja.
Gurara Waterfalls is one of the country’s tourist sites. The
falls was named after the Gwari people gods they worshipped, “Gura” and “Rara”.
The waterfall was first discovered in 1745, by a Gwari hunter named Buba, who
was travelling from Zaria in search of animals. Later in 1925, some Europeans discovered
the waterfalls and turned the area to a recreational spot, thus making the
Gwari worshippers to stop their ritual practice at the waterfalls.
The falls peak is between April and November and its
lowest peak between January and March.
The Gurara Waterfalls transfer water, for irrigation
purpose for farmers and to generate electricity at the Gurara Dam.
