House of Silence, Shiga

House of Silence is a single family private resident building. It is located in Shiga, Japan. The building was designed by FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects. It is a two storey building built on an area of 321,235sqm. The project was completed in 2012.

House of Silence is concrete volume building. A rough concrete finish, shiny tiles and opening like a belfry will give you a hint of the variation of spaces insides.
According to the Architect “client wanted to have a house which is not influenced by the environment of its location”, so the building is independent from its surroundings. It was designed to be noticeably cut off from the buzzing city; not as much in terms of noise cancellation as in terms of visual obstructions.

It is a rigid concrete volume structure with few windows. The walls are raised like a barrier to form a protective perimeter layer. These raised walls obstruct visual connection to the rest of the city.
A robust out shell is created by slotting together a cubic volume and intersects planes. The rooms are divided by ceiling heights, different floor levels, and types of light instead of walls. This was pointed out by the Architect “this house will give you the experience of going through a variety of sequences, like going through cloisters with the light.

Surprisingly the interior spaces of the house is open and bright, because of the interior spaces are open towards an internal courtyard. The court is opened to the sky. The inner courtyard is cut off from the outside environment.
The home is connected by the circulated line of flow.
